AEO for Medical Practices: What It Is and Why It Is About to Matter

By Lonnie Sanders III · July 13, 2026

Search is changing fast in 2026. Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other answer engines are increasingly the first place patients look for healthcare information. That shift is creating a new discipline: answer engine optimization, or AEO. Practices that get in front of it will pull ahead. Practices that ignore it will be invisible in a rapidly growing share of searches.

What AEO is.

Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring your content so that AI systems can pull direct answers from it and cite you as the source. When a patient asks ChatGPT "What is the average cost of an initial visit with a chiropractor in Emeryville?" the AI generates an answer. If your practice website has that answer written clearly, with structured data, and appears authoritative on the topic, you may get cited. If not, the AI cites someone else.

How AEO differs from SEO.

SEO optimizes for search engines showing a list of results. AEO optimizes for AI systems generating a single answer. The overlap is significant. Both benefit from structured content, clear authorship, and technical hygiene. The differences matter:

  • SEO rewards ranking. AEO rewards being cited.
  • SEO benefits from keyword targeting. AEO benefits from question-and-answer structure.
  • SEO measures clicks. AEO measures citations and brand mentions.
  • SEO relies on backlinks. AEO relies on authoritative signals like schema markup, citation consistency, and content depth.

Why medical practices should start now.

Nearly half of healthcare searches in 2026 are influenced by AI-powered results. That share is growing. Patients using AI to research providers get a curated answer, not a list. The practices cited in that answer get the attention. Everyone else disappears.

The window to establish authority before the AI results settle into their patterns is closing. Practices that build AEO now start showing up in AI answers within months. Practices that wait have to unseat established citations later, which is harder.

How to start.

  • Structure content around questions patients ask. Instead of a services page paragraph, use "What does an initial visit include?" as an H2 with a direct paragraph answer.
  • Add FAQ schema to service pages and blog posts wherever FAQs exist.
  • Use Article schema and Organization schema on every piece of content.
  • Cite yourself as an author consistently so AI systems can attribute expertise.
  • Publish in-depth content on the treatments you specialize in. Depth signals authority.
  • Ensure your Google Business Profile is fully populated. AI systems draw from GBP data for local queries.

None of these are exotic. Most are extensions of good SEO work. Practices that do them systematically start showing up in AI answers within a quarter.

The Findability Scan scores both traditional SEO signals and the AEO readiness of your online presence.
