Google Business Profile Mistakes That Cost You New Patients

By Lonnie Sanders III · July 6, 2026

Your Google Business Profile is the first thing most prospective patients see when they search for a practice like yours. For many, it is the only thing they see. The information there decides whether they call, whether they book, or whether they scroll to a competitor. Most independent practices have avoidable mistakes on their GBP that are costing them patients right now.

The most common mistakes and what they cost you.

Unclaimed or unverified profile. If you have not claimed the listing, someone else can suggest edits, or worse, hijack it. Unverified profiles rank lower and cannot post updates. Fix: claim and verify through Google Business Profile Manager. Takes about a week.

Wrong or incomplete categories. Practices set their primary category too broad ("Doctor" instead of "Chiropractor") or miss secondary categories entirely. Categories directly affect which searches your profile appears in. Fix: set primary to the most specific accurate match. Add every applicable secondary category.

Missing services. Google lets you list every service you offer with a description. Most practices leave this empty or add three generic items. Fix: add every service with a patient-friendly description that includes the language they search with.

No photos or outdated photos. Profiles with fresh photos rank better and convert better. Profiles with no photos or photos more than a year old signal an inactive business. Fix: add fresh interior, exterior, staff, and equipment photos. Refresh monthly.

Wrong hours. Hours that do not reflect actual availability cause bad experiences and negative reviews. Special hours around holidays that are not updated cause the same. Fix: set correct standard hours. Update special hours monthly.

Ignored reviews. Reviews without responses signal an inattentive practice. Both positive and negative reviews need a response. Fix: respond to every review within 48 hours. Positive gets a brief thank you. Negative gets acknowledgment and a private path to resolution.

No posts. Google Business Posts show up in the profile and can influence ranking. Most practices never post. Fix: one post per week. Announcements, patient education, service highlights, staff introductions.

Inconsistent NAP. If the name, address, or phone number on your GBP does not match your website, your Yelp listing, or your Healthgrades page, Google discounts your profile. Fix: audit every citation. Match exactly.

Duplicate profiles. Old locations, prior business names, or accidentally created duplicates split your review count and confuse rankings. Fix: request merges or removals through Google Business Profile Manager.

No practitioner profiles. For group practices, individual practitioners can each have their own profile linked to the practice profile. Most groups skip this. Fix: build individual practitioner profiles for every provider.

The cost of leaving these alone.

Each of these mistakes independently reduces your visibility and conversion. Together they add up to a practice that could be visible and is not, and one that could be booking new patients weekly and is not.

Every one is fixable in hours or days, not months.
