You Are Losing Patients and May Not Know It
By Lonnie Sanders III · May 18, 2026
The scariest kind of patient loss is the kind you cannot see. You do not get a cancellation call. You do not get a bad review. You do not get anything at all. The patient searched, looked at three or four options, chose one of them, and it was not you. You never knew they existed.
If your practice depends on new patient volume and you are relying on referrals or word of mouth alone, this is happening to you every week.
Here is what invisible patient loss looks like:
- Someone in your area searches "orthopedic doctor near me" on a Tuesday afternoon. Your Google Business Profile is missing hours, has no photos, and shows two three-year-old reviews. The next three results have full profiles, 40+ recent reviews, and appear in the map pack. The patient clicks one of them.
- A prospective patient searches for a specific procedure you perform. Your website has a services page that mentions the procedure once in a paragraph of general information. A competitor has a dedicated page with FAQs, patient education, and clear next steps. The patient reads the competitor's page and books there.
- Someone reads a Facebook recommendation for a practice like yours. They Google your name to verify it. Your website loads slowly on their phone, the contact information is buried, and the online scheduling link is broken. They give up and search again.
None of these patients reach out to you. None of them tell you they almost came in. They just disappear.
How to measure this without waiting for it to become a crisis:
- Search the terms your patients would use, in an incognito window, with your location set correctly. See where you appear.
- Count your Google Business Profile reviews from the last 12 months. Fewer than 20? You are underperforming.
- Load your website on a phone using a slow connection. If it takes more than 3 seconds to show content, patients are bouncing.
- Compare your Google Business Profile completeness to the top three competitors in your specialty and city. Anywhere they show more information than you, you are losing to them.
What to do about it.
Patient loss to invisible online failures is fixable. Not always easily and not always fast, but always fixable. Every gap has a specific counter. Weak Google Business Profile? Complete it. No reviews? Generate them systematically. Slow website? Fix the mobile experience. Missing from the map pack? Improve proximity signals, prominence signals, and relevance signals.
The Findability Scan measures every one of these signals for your practice and tells you which ones are costing you the most patients right now. Get yours here. Free. Delivered within 2 business days. Most sent same day.
